Siree Barry

My name is Siree Mariama Barry, but most people call me, Siree but also others call me Mariama too, but Siree is common. I was born on May 28, 1998, on a Thursday in St Barnabas Hospital. Right now I am currently 18 years old, a senior at P.U.L.S.E high school. Throughout my life, I moved from three different locations, starting from Burnside to River Park Towers. Now I am at Franklin Avenue, located in the Bronx. I had a lot of downfalls in my life that I wish not to speak about, but what I can talk about is what I did to stay a strong woman and get through those downfalls.

Messing up in high school had to be the worst mistake I made because it pushed me back and made me think I wouldn’t be a successful woman or come home make my parents proud and show them I did it. I didn’t have anybody to push me harder to succeed. I motivated myself by telling myself: “Do what you gotta do to show people you can do it without needing no one’s help.”  Now that I pushed myself I’m one step closer to graduating in June.

One person that I do admire today is my boyfriend. We grew up having the same struggles. He understands me more than my parents do. We both got through our struggles and problems together. We both knew if anything bad was to happen to one of us we will always have each other’s back. Currently in my life right now, he’s the only one who sees me walking down that stage. I can’t blame my actions for messing up. I can only learn from them, and I learned that no matter what I go through or whatever conflict pops up in my life I know I’m strong enough to get through it.

To be honest, at first I was saying to myself school wasn’t for me because I was failing my classes to the point where I wanted to give up, but after I entered P.U.L.S.E. High School, school is not really hard. You just have to put your mind to it and concentrate. I felt more comfortable in P.U.L.S.E. more than any high school I’ve attended to because the teachers and staff are there when you need help. They not only help you, but they also let you know when you’re not progressing. Most teachers in other schools wouldn’t even care how you are doing. The subject I’m mostly good in at school is math. I find math really easy. I prefer to be in that class because I get things done quickly. There are no extra curricular activities in this school, besides pm courses we can take to graduate earlier.

Out of school, I enjoy going home and watching Netflix, but normally what I do is work and playing volleyball. Playing volleyball has always been a hobby to me since I was a young child. I have been on many volleyball teams. I am very good at it. I also enjoy working out of school to gain experiences, but also to put money in my pocket.
